Leaking Gutters? Three Possible Reasons Why This Is Happening

Leaking gutters is never a good thing. Water pouring from the gutters has the potential to damage your landscaping and foundation and is usually an indication that something is not right with the installed gutters. However, to correct the problem, you must first determine what is wrong. Learn about some of the common issues that can lead to a leak.
Clogged Gutters
A leading reason for this issue is clogged gutters. All sorts of debris can collect inside gutters over time. Birds and rodents can build nests in the gutters; if you are near trees, leaves can fall and settle inside. Debris flying in the air can also land in the gutter.
This collection of materials prevents water from moving toward the downspouts, which will eventually cause them to fill and spill over. Cleaning the gutters will typically solve the problem. As a general rule, you should clean your gutters annually, but if there are several trees around your home, more frequent cleaning might be necessary.
Improper Installation
If you notice a leak and your gutters are relatively new, an improper installation could be to blame. When gutters are installed, they must be fastened as close to the home structure as possible. Even the slightest leak will allow water to leak. They must also be installed with a slight slope.
The slope ensures the water moves towards the downspout and does not settle in the middle of the slope. Each gutter extension must also be securely fastened to one another. When these steps are not performed properly, the gutter can leak. Always leave gutter installation to a professional; it should never be a do-it-yourself project.
Cracked Gutters
A crack in the gutters can also lead to a leak. Cracks can form in any gutter, but they are relatively common in gutters made from galvanized steel. The problem is that galvanized steel can be especially prone to rust in wet weather. As the rust eats through the material, tiny holes form in the gutters that allow water to leak.
Painting the gutters routinely to help prevent rust development and penetration is one way to avoid the issue. However, if you live in a climate especially prone to moist air and wet weather, vinyl or aluminum gutters might be a better long-term solution.
