How To Sealcoat Your Driveway

Posted on: 22 March 2023

Sealcoating is a task that you need to do to your driveway every couple of years in order to seal the asphalt and prevent it from breaking apart or cracking. When your driveway begins to crack, it can quickly break apart. Sealcoating helps to keep it all together with a thin coating of tar to keep the driveway fresh and to keep it all together. If your driveway needs some sealcoating, you need to get to work before it's too late. Read on for tips to help you sealcoat your driveway.

Tools For The Job:

  • Sealcoat

  • Long-handled squeegee

  • Paintbrush

  • Broom

  • Torch

Instructions:

1. Clear Lot

First, you need to remove all of the weeds that may have already started to grow through the minor cracks in your driveway. Use a torch to kill the weeds, or you can scrape the weeds out with a chisel. Once you remove the weeds, you need to use a broom to remove any of the loose debris. A shop vacuum to remove debris can also be helpful. Be sure to get rid of the weeds entirely, meaning you need to get rid of the roots as well. Use a spray weed killer to kill the weeds as well.

2. Sealcoating

After you have killed the weeds and cleaned up your driveway, you can begin the process of sealcoating. Open the bucket of sealcoat and pour out a small amount, beginning at the top of your driveway, use the squeegee to apply the sealcoat evenly across the driveway. Apply it in small areas at a time, working from one side of the driveway to the other, then moving down a bit and applying it to another section, working your way back and forth.

3. Edges

When you get to the edges of the driveway, use a paintbrush to apply the sealcoating to prevent getting it onto any areas where you do not want to apply the sealcoat, near your garage floor, or near the curb or sidewalk. Once the sealcoating gets onto these areas, it will be there for quite some time, so you need to be careful not to get it anywhere that you do not want it.

4. Set and Dry

Apply the sealcoat evenly all the way across and down your driveway. Once you get to the end, you need to give the sealcoat time to dry and set. This means you cannot drive on your driveway until it is set. You should place caution tape across the driveway to prevent anyone from driving or walking across it. This may take a day or two to set.

If your driveway is looking a little worn out, you should apply asphalt sealcoating. Hire a professional to do this work for you to ensure it is done properly.
