Building Spaces And Building Design: Finding The Size And Space That Are Just Right

Posted on: 31 May 2022

If you have a chance to design your own home, you need to work with a team of building designers and contractors to ensure the design not only meets codes but also serves you well. It is possible to create a design that looks great on paper but that does not work out so well in real life, and to avoid that, you need a team of designers and contractors who can keep the plans realistic. This doesn't mean you can't have your dream design; it just means you need to design it carefully.

Actual Use Patterns and Needs

You might have lived in houses and apartments that didn't suit your life completely, forcing you to adapt. Now, building and designing your own home gives you the opportunity to create a space that seems perfect for you. When you work with a building designer, they'll help you determine exactly what spaces you truly need and whether a bonus room or two is advisable. You'll have to look at your actual patterns of use to ensure that your dream design really matches what you need in real life.

Do You Really Want to Clean All That?

This might be the design for your dream home, so it's not a surprise if you want really big rooms and a room for everything. But keep upkeep in mind. You'll have to clean all those rooms. (Yes, you could hire a cleaning crew, but what happens if that becomes too expensive and you have to start cleaning the home yourself?) Are you really going to want to spend the time maintaining and cleaning a house that large? Also, what features are you incorporating into the design, and how easy to clean or fix are they? You and the building designer need to meet and discuss what you want and how those choices will affect the home in the future.

The Downside of Downsizing Your Plans Too Much

Maybe you wanted to go in the other direction and have a smaller home with more open land around it. That's a good plan for many people, and maybe having a smaller home is better for you. However, don't make it too small. The building designer can help you keep room sizes within ranges that allow people to have enough furniture to be comfortable without creating monstrously large spaces. Although, having a large bedroom, for example, can be relaxing. Remember, the point of making a home smaller is not to make people feel hemmed in but to merely use space wisely.
